Painted Planet was opened in January 2001 by Donna "Red Bow" Bowers.

The gallery was initially designed to showcase the handcrafted jewelry of her husband, Danny "Doc" Bowers. In the past, Donna had worked as a freelance watercolor artist and in music promotions. Danny had won a number of awards for his nature and scenic photography and was expanding his talents to include stained glass. Both had also worked as custom picture framers. Ultimately, Donna decided there were just too many talented artists in the Memphis area and expanded the scope of the gallery to include art. Painted Planet Artspace was born. Painted Planet continues to feature the works of Memphis artists in all media - painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, glass, jewelry, fabric, and handcrafted candles and personal soaps, lotions, and bathsalts. And it is not limited to Memphis. Works can also be found by regional American artists and international artists from Russia, Canada, France, South Africa, Japan, Jamaica, Ukraine, and China. So, whether you are looking for wild and funky or something more traditional for your home or office, Painted Planet is the gallery to turn to for your art needs.

Two years into Painted Planet's existence, Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Out of that experience, Donna created Healing Planet. But, that is another story...
